3 Days in Saranda: The Perfect Long Weekend

Three days is enough to fall for Saranda (Sarandë): a day for the town and its castle sunset, a day for ancient Butrint and Ksamil's famous water, and a day inland for the Blue Eye and stone-built Gjirokastër. Here is the plan, hour by golden hour.

Day 1: The town, the promenade, the sunset

  • Morning: swim at the town beach, then coffee on the promenade. Albanians treat espresso as a ritual; join them.
  • Midday: visit the 5th-century synagogue ruins in the center, then lunch on grilled fish by the water.
  • Afternoon: wander the port and the bay; gelato is mandatory.
  • Evening: taxi up to Lëkurësi Castle 30 minutes before sunset. The view over the bay to Corfu is the best in town. Dinner at a seafood taverna after.

Day 2: Butrint & Ksamil

  • Early: bus or taxi to Butrint National Park (Butrinti), a UNESCO site with 2,500 years of ruins in a lagoon-side forest. Give it 2-3 hours before the heat.
  • Midday: hop back north to Ksamil (Ksamili) for lunch by the beach.
  • Afternoon: Ksamil's shallow, impossibly clear water and the three islands you can swim to. In July-August, book loungers ahead.
  • Evening: dinner in Ksamil or back in Saranda; try tavë kosi, the national baked lamb-and-yogurt dish.

Day 3: The Blue Eye & Gjirokastër

  • Morning: drive or tour to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a spring so blue it looks unreal. Photos before the crowds.
  • Midday: continue to Gjirokastër (Gjirokastra), the UNESCO stone town. Lunch in the old bazaar.
  • Afternoon: the castle, the cobbled lanes, a coffee with a view.
  • Evening: back to Saranda for a farewell raki on the promenade. Gëzuar!
