Description

St. George’s Monastery (Manastiri i Shën Gjergjit) is an ancient Orthodox monastery and designated Cultural Monument of Albania located in the village of Demë, near Sarandë. Perched on a hill at the narrowest point of the Ksamil peninsula, the monastery offers spectacular views of the Ionian Sea, Lake Butrint, and the Greek island of Corfu, making it one of the most beautifully situated religious sites in Albania.

The monastery complex is part of the fortified monasteries category, featuring walls equipped with towers and turrets that were built in the 18th century on the ruins of ancient walls. The compound includes two churches and two auxiliary buildings, all enclosed by a protective wall that gives the site a fortress-like appearance from the outside.

The main Church of St. George has origins dating back to the 14th century, though it underwent extensive reconstruction in the 19th century. Its interior is decorated with icons and somewhat faded wall paintings, and features an unusual iconostasis made from bricks with three narrow passages leading to the altar. The church has a long narthex leading to the nave, above which rises a dome, and three levels of overlapping wall paintings can be seen on the inner walls.

Located approximately 9 kilometers from Sarandë’s city center, the monastery sits halfway between Sarandë and the archaeological site of Butrint, about half a kilometer uphill from the main road (roughly a 10-minute walk). While the monastery grounds are often locked to visitors, the site remains worth visiting for its stunning panoramic views and historical significance. Visitors can explore the exterior and enjoy activities like sunset watching or hiking down to nearby beaches. The challenging road leading up to the monastery makes it advisable to park at the main road and walk the final stretch.
